Setting goals is not as simple as saying “I want to be leaner and stronger”, which is usually what outcome my clients are after when we conduct their first discovery session.
These are goals that are not specific or measurable and you’re likely not going to succeed because you won’t even know when you’ve gotten where you want to go.
What is leaner? What is stronger? Compared to what? How will you know when you get there? When do you want to get there? What will you do in order to get there? What are you NOT prepared to do in order to get there?
Because these types of goals aren’t measurable, specific or on a deadline, you also won’t be able to tell if you are progressing or not, what rate you are progressing at or how to troubleshoot in order to continue seeing success.
When I work with you, it is my responsibility to manage your expectations and focus on your goals to make sure you accomplish them. It is not your job to focus on the outcomes, but the behaviours that will get you there.
Setting specific goals that are measurable and with a deadline is important for your success. But are you setting outcome goals or behaviour goals? Are you setting avoidance goals or approach goals? I dive deeper into this topic and help you create behaviour goals and manage your expectations.
In this 30 minute video on setting goals I cover:
- Setting goals that are written down, measurable, specific, on a deadline, realistic, inspiring and personally significant
- Managing expectations and why it’s not your job to focus on the outcome
- Behaviour vs outcome goals and why it’s your responsibility to focus on the behaviours
- What reasonable progress looks like when it comes to changing body composition
- Setting APPROACH goals instead of AVOIDANCE goals
- Setting mastery goals instead of performance goals
- Adhering to a nutrition and exercise program
